I was a finalist for a job at a branch campus of a major midwestern state university three years ago. It was to be a faculty position but more important was for a director of a civil liberties institute. Turns out it was fully funded by Koch money -- I did not know this when I got on the plane. Meanwhile I arrive as a civil rights/anti-apartheid historian and let's just say it wasn't THOSE civil liberties they were concerned with. A few days after I returned from the campus visit I got a nice if terse email saying that they had shut down the search to reconsider the needs of the position. I have no idea what happened subsequently, but I can say that it was not actual civil liberties they were interested in pursuing. (The faculty on the search committee could not have been nicer and were clearly caught between a rock and a hard place.)
